In 2005 Rip Curl partnered with the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) and organised the first Rip Curl Pro Search contest. A unique event in the fact that it has obtained, for the first time in the history of the sport, licensing that allows the contest to relocate for each yearly event, to any location approved by the ASP in the world.

The tournament usually runs for 12 days and, with the possibility of relocation, is almost always guaranteed to present only the most challenging conditions for the tournament entrants. In past years the tournament has been held in places such as, St. Leu, Reunion Island, La Jolla, Mexico, El Gringo, Chile, and Bali, Indonesia. With the success of the event, Rip Curl and the ASP have agreed to extend licensing through until 2018 with the promise that only A-grade locations will be selected.
